Rocketmail was one of the first major free webmail services and was a product of Four11. For a brief time, Rocketmail battled with Hotmail for the number one spot among free webmail services. Four11, along with Rocketmail, was bought by Yahoo! in 1997. All Rocketmail accounts were integrated into Yahoo! accounts. Currently the Rocketmail website redirects viewers to the Yahoo! Mail website.

While at the time of the takeover, Rocketmail was very popular, many remaining users flocked away from Rocketmail. Few Rocketmail users completed account transitions to Yahoo! Mail and of those that did, few remain today.

Today, remaining Rocketmail users carry a mark of distinction. Since Yahoo does not allow new registrants to use the Rocketmail domain, remaining users had established their accounts prior to 1998, making them among some of the first internet webmail users.

Current Rocketmail users use "username.rm" as their Yahoo! ID and are able to receive the same services as all Yahoo! users.
